Regional Education Director, Alexandria

 

Ms. Shanta Price is the Regional Education Director for the Alexandria Campus. Shanta joined APTS July, 2018, serving as an Educational Supervisor. She immediately demonstrated her ability to lead proactively, improving her assigned school POD, producing more student success. Shanta is highly resourced in her experience working in public school systems, including: Prince William County Public Schools, the District of Columbia Public Schools as well as Anne Arundel County Public Schools.

Shanta began her career in education as a Coordinator for Kids’ Café with the Capital Area Region Food Bank. In this role, she worked to provide urgently needy youth and families in Northern Virginia with meals and nutrition education. She expanded the impact of the programs by increasing the number of students served from 1,700 to more than 2,000.

In 2009, Shanta worked as a Unit Coordinator for the Virginia Cooperative Extension (Virginia Tech) in Arlington, Virginia. In this role, she created experiential learning opportunities for youth and families and taught Career Education to high school students. She later transitioned to DC Public Schools as a Special Educator where she taught 11th and 12th grade Advanced Placement Language and Composition (AP) as well as managed a Resource Room for students with varying exceptionalities.

Shanta taught 3rd grade students at a Chinese Immersion International Baccalaureate World School and in 2015, became a Transition Specialist. Working in this role, she served students with disabilities and their families by facilitating matriculating students’ transitions to postsecondary services; and by providing quality transition support services, linking students to adult community agencies and providers.

Her next professional work was found in serving as the Manager of Middle School Transition for DC Public Schools, where she interpreted state and local secondary transition policies and communicated the changes to the 30 schools division wide.

Shanta holds two Master’s Degrees: one in Education from Virginia Tech University and one in Special Education from George Mason University. She is pursuing a Certificate in Educational Leadership and Administration from George Washington University.

Of herself, Shanta says she is “passionate about enriching the lives of young people inside and outside of the classroom”. Shanta is married, and a mother of two children, ages 3 and 5. She is a native of South Carolina and enjoys listening to music, visiting the beach, Hot Yoga, gardening and event planning.
