ABA or Applied Behavior Analysis is a field of behavioral science that is specifically applied to human behavior. Individuals who practice ABA are called BCBAs or Board Certified Behavior Analysts. Additionally, there are also BCaBAs (Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analysts) and RBTs (Registered Behavior Technicians) who work under the close supervision of a BCBA to provide behavior analytic services.

ABA provides a scientifically based way to support skill acquisition across a variety of populations, both typically developing and those with neurodevelopmental disorders, young and old.

Example Programs

Disclaimer: Please DO NOT IMPLEMENT any of these programs without first communicating with your APTS Behavior Specialist and obtaining training, coaching, and supervision of the implementation. This is for student and parent protection. While these are all reinforcement based strategies they do require student specific adaptations to be successful. Additionally, the presence of any new intervention can effect other interventions and patterns of behavior and needs to be done carefully with supervision of a licensed and board certified behavior analyst (LBA/BCBA). You can use these as examples of skills which can be taught, as well as the general procedure for many of these programs. If there are skills you wish to work on with your student, please contact your Behavior Specialist/Analyst to have more student specific programs developed to meet the student’s needs.

Matching to Sample

Matching to Sample is a way to teach students to identify certain stimuli and sort them based on category! We can work on identifying items within a category (think pick all the kitchen items), we can work on matching same item to same item (find the picture of the table and match it the picture of the table), we can even work on teaching students to categorize, match, and sort when it comes to picking letters when we say the letter, the letter sound, etc. See the hand out for more information on what this teaching strategy is, how to use it, and ideas of what you can teach!
